Mamianqun 马面裙, Ming & Qing Dynasties Horse Face Skirt

Why is the Mamianqun (马面裙 ; mǎ miàn qún) called Horse Face Skirt? Is it because it looks like a horse face?

The word “Mamian” appeared as clothing, first in “History of Ming Palace”.

But the history of Mamianqun can be traced back to the Song dynasty because the skirts in the Song dynasty already had the horse-faced shape of the Mamianqun.

Mamianqun, also known as Mamian Zhequn / Horse-Faced Pleated Skirt (马面褶裙 ; mǎ miàn zhě qún), was one of the most popular skirts in the Ming and Qing dynasties.
